Clinical placement is where nursing students actually learn the job, and it is also where many of them come closest to giving up on it. Full-time placement leaves little room for paid shifts, and for students who rely on casual work to cover rent in Hobart or Launceston, a placement block can mean weeks without income at exactly the point their course demands the most from them.
The Commonwealth Prac Payment was introduced in July 2025 to address that gap directly, and the ANMF has called it a genuine step forward while continuing to push for it to reach more students. For placements in 2026, the payment is $338.60 a week, a rate benchmarked to the single Austudy amount and adjusted each January.
Who is eligible
Eligible domestic students need to be undertaking a mandatory practicum placement as part of an accredited entry-to-practice nursing, midwifery, teaching or social work degree, undertaking a full-time placement of at least 30 hours a week, or a continuity of care placement for midwifery students. The payment is means tested. Broadly, you need to have worked an average of 15 or more hours a week over a four-week period during normal study, with income under the relevant weekly threshold, or be receiving an approved Centrelink or Department of Veterans Affairs income support payment.

How to actually apply
You do not apply through Centrelink directly. Students apply through their higher education provider, which manages the process alongside placement scheduling. If you are studying nursing in Tasmania, the practical move is to raise it with your course coordinator or student services well before your next placement block, rather than scrambling once you are already on the ward.
A placement you cannot afford to complete isn’t a training gap, it’s a workforce loss the sector cannot afford either.
Why this matters for aged care specifically
Placement poverty has been a quiet driver of attrition in nursing courses for years, and aged care placements, often outside major hospital hubs, have not always been the easiest to combine with paid work. A payment that makes a full-time placement financially survivable makes it more likely that Tasmanian students complete their training, and more likely that some of them choose to build a career in aged care rather than ruling it out for financial reasons before they have properly experienced it.
